12 Things to Get Your Home Ready for Fall

zercher-homes-things-to-get-home-ready-for-fallIf you’ve already seen the Christmas displays at the mall, then you know that fall is here and winter is just around the corner! We want you and your home to be ready for the season. Here are 12 things to get your home ready for fall!

  1. Seal gaps and cracks around windows and doors with weather-stripping and caulk. Remove screens and install storm windows and doors if you use them.
  2. Reverse your ceiling fan. Switch from a counter-clockwise rotation to clockwise, which will push the warm air near the ceiling downward to the living space. Then you can then decrease your thermostat a degree or two since the fan will be circulating warm air.
  3. Inspect your roof for damaged or curled shingles, corroded flashing, or leaky vents. Inspect and clean your gutters and downspouts.
  4. Fix concrete and asphalt cracks – Just as freezing water will expand and burst plumbing lines, H2O that gets into cracks in your sidewalk or driveway will also freeze, expand, and force the crack to open wider.
  5. Aerate your lawn; it will allow moisture and nutrients to get into the roots. When you’re done, spread fertilizer then grass seed.
  6. Have your wood-burning fireplace inspected, cleaned and repaired to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
  7. Divide or move your perennials. Remove dead annuals and mulch hardy perennials. Annuals typically die when temperatures drop below freezing.
  8. Trim dead branches from your trees to prevent them from coming down and causing damage in a winter storm.
  9. Have your furnace inspected. Hire an HVAC professional to test for leaks, check heating efficiency, and change the filter.
  10. Bring in flowerpots. If you keep plants or flower in pots year-round, bring them inside. If you replace plants every year, empty, clean, dry pots and put away for next spring.
  11. Clean your outdoor seasonal furniture and bring it inside.
  12. Clean the garage. Since you’re in the garage prepping for fall, you might as well purge, organize and clean it while you’re there!
